The "Elephant"The building was finished being built in 1901 it was known as the North Seaton hotel and owned by Robert Deuchar breweries, the motifs can still be seen carved into parts of the building today.(Deuchars were later taken over by Scottish and Newcastle breweries) The North Seaton Hotel was built as a coaching Inn and the origins can still be identified today, such as the old arch ("modernised') today by the kitchen area along with many other original architectural areas. Which have been buried in time, some can still be identified. The business operated as a successful hotel,the only one in the town at the time, with 9 letting bedrooms,a restaurant function suite and four separate bars.It successfully competed with no less than 22 working mens clubs in the area. It's now a glossed over half occupied,allowed to fall in disrepair""boozer" known as " The Elephant" The facts of how this business was nicknamed "The Elephant" Are as follows When the hotel was built in the 1900s the licences were transferred to the North Seaton hotel from another public house in stakeford and it was believed that the North Seaton hotel wouldn't be viable and was deemed a "White elephant" hence the nickname. This floron old grand old Victorian building which is half derelict now should have been listed many years ago.It acts as a part time glossy boozer and so sad to see its decline thanks to its current owners.
